Drs. Cook and Creedon co-facilitate workshop on “Methods for Understanding Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Substance Use Disorder and Related Treatment Services” at Brandeis-Harvard NIDA Center
On March 27th, Benjamin Lê Cook, PhD, MPH and Tim Creedon, PhD will present methods relevant to measuring, tracking and understanding mechanisms underlying substance use disorder (SUD) and SUD treatment services. The methods of measuring disparities are concordant with the Institute of Medicine’s definition of racial/ethnic disparities as outlined in the Institute of Medicine’s 2003 seminal publication Unequal Treatment.
They will also provide an overview of a few innovative research methods that extend past measurement and tracking of SUD disparities to understanding mechanisms underlying these disparities. Examples of these latter methods include the use of structural equation modeling (SEM) to identify moderators and mediators underlying disparities and methods of eliciting discrimination in the healthcare setting and patient treatment preferences.
